Our Resources
Definitions
The Shelter Alliance collaborative process allows the agencies to present an accurate position to the public about pet overpopulation and the relationship between resources and live release rate. By establishing common definitions and benchmarks, member agencies will be equipped with neutral and consistent language to use when educating the public about pet overpopulation and the resulting need for euthanasia.
This website presents the definitions, disposition criteria and data reporting methods agreed upon by the participating organizations. Individual agencies have agreed to modify their existing definitions, disposition criteria and record-keeping procedures to cooperate in this effort, but they will continue to use their own internal procedures for evaluating animals for adoption. Members of the Alliance are committed to respecting the perimeters of the document and keeping a high standard of statistic integrity. These terms will be reviewed annually to reflect current Alliance practices
The following definitions were modified in December 2004 and are common to all Metro Denver Shelter Alliance Agencies:

- Asilomar Accords: In August of 2004, a group of animal welfare industry leaders from across the nation convened at Asilomar in Pacific Grove, California for the purpose of building bridges across varying philosophies, developing relationships and creating goals focused on significantly reducing the euthanasia of healthy and treatable companion animals in the United States.
Through hard work, lively discussion and brainstorming, a common vision for the future was adopted. The leadership of many national and local organizations participated in the original, and/or subsequent meetings, and were involved in the drafting of the "Asilomar Accords": The mission of those involved in creating the Asilomar Accords is to work together to save the lives of all healthy and treatable companion animals.
